9870 STS Corn Combines can be equipped with an optional fully automatic cleaning shoe leveling system that will maintain cleaning capacity when harvesting on sloping terrain. The self-leveling cleaning shoe system tilts the rear chaffer and sieve grid sections, or bays, in side-hill conditions to:
  • Reduce shoe losses
  • Reduce tailings levels
  • Maintain near-level land ground speed and shoe capacity on slopes of over 8 to 12 degrees.


The self-leveling cleaning shoe system retains all performance-enhancing features of all 9870STS machines. Features such as:

  • Remote in-cab cleaning shoe adjustment
  • TouchSet™ automatic combine adjustment
  • ICC, Increased Cleaning System Capacity available on the 9870 STS

The John Deere self-leveling cleaning shoe provides the largest tilt range in the industry. The chaffer bays tilt from the level position +/- 16 degrees and the sieve bays +/-10 degrees. Tall crop dividers are installed on the clean grain return pan and front chaffer, and the crop diverter agitator flaps help to deliver material in an even distribution to the chaffer bays. To ensure that the free grain and chaff do not accumulate on the downhill side on the cleaning shoe bays, the system actually overcompensates the degree of tilt needed for level operation. This overcompensation of the chaffer and sieve elements to the uphill side helps ensure that the entire louver area of the elements is utilized, providing the maximum cleaning system capacity.

The self-leveling cleaning system utilizes a sensor mounted to the front axle to detect the angle of the slope on which the combine is operating. This machine tilt angle is used by the system software to calculate the proper chaffer and sieve bay tilt, including the overcompensation factor, to maintain cleaning system productivity. Another tilt sensor mounted to the element bays supplies feedback to the system software when proper tilt angle is reached. The chaffer and sieve element bays will move through the entire range of travel in approximately 10 seconds, allowing for high-performance slope compensation even at high ground speeds in sharply changing slopes or when making turns on headlands.

The system automatically is engaged whenever the separator is engaged, but can be manually turned off by the switch on the CommandTouch™ armrest console. A manual tilt control switch is also available for the operator to override automatic tilting operation.

Chaffer and sieve element opening is adjusted with the same CommandTouch™ armrest switches used on combines not equipped with the self-leveling cleaning system.

The operator can view information about the system status and operation on the CommandCenter™ armrest display. When the self-leveling system is engaged, the combine outline is colored green and the chaffer and sieve position are indicated during operation. When maximum tilt travel is reached, the chaffer and sieve indicators within the outlined combine will flash to alert the operator.

Easy-to-remove bays

When service or maintenance is required, the element bays are easily removable by one person. Because the individual element sections are serviceable inspection, cleaning and maintenance can be performed quickly.
