PowerTech PSX 9.0L engine

In 8R and 8RT Series Tractors, the PowerTech PSX 9.0L engines provide power take-off (PTO) torque rise up to 44 percent and PTO power bulge of 12 percent. There are several performance characteristics of the 9.0L engines that ensure excellent performance in almost any situation.
 

Key engine features such as series turbochargers – a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) and a fixed-geometry turbocharger – and the four-valve cylinder head provide high levels of torque rise and fuel economy and allow the engines to reach peak torque quickly.

A combination of advanced design features contained in PowerTech PSX 9.0L engines and surrounding tractor systems work together to provide the most efficient use of engine power, resulting in less fuel consumption.
  • A 24-valve cylinder head (four valves per cylinder)
  • A VGT in combination with a fixed-geometry turbocharger
  • A high-pressure common rail fuel system with single-injector electronic control
  • The Vari-Cool™ system components:
    • The variable-speed fan and hood design
  • The drivetrain and brake system are focused on limiting oil windage losses that reduce available engine power and increase fuel usage.
  • Automatic PowerShift and infinitely variable transmissions (AutoPowr™/IVT™) can be optimized for maximum fuel efficiency.

Oil and coolant drain intervals
 
The 9.0L (548 cu. in.) engine features a 500-hour change interval when using approved John Deere Plus-50™ II oil and John Deere oil filter.
  • Previous initial oil and filter change at 100 hours is no longer required due to the factory oil fill of Break-In Plus™.
  • If using anything other than John Deere Plus-50 II, a 250-hour change interval is required.
  • Only use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.
  • An oil change of 500 hours is possible when using fuel with less than 15 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, along with John Deere Plus-50 II oil.
To further reduce maintenance requirements, long-life coolant/antifreeze with coolant conditioner is used as the factory fill on all 8R and 8RT Series Tractors. The use of COOL-GARD™ II is recommended and extends the coolant system drain intervals. Refer to the operator’s manual for more information.
